Boho art is all about free-spirited creativity, earthy aesthetics, and a touch of minimalism. This simple yet effective exercise will help you explore the impact of color and form using just three colors and three basic shapes. By changing the color palette each time, you’ll see how different combinations create unique moods and vibes Two boho painting attached below with two different colour palettes.

What You’ll Need:
Acrylics, watercolors (whichever medium you prefer)
Brushes, black pen or marker
Canvas, sketchbook
OR
digital workspace (DIYvinci Pixelette or procreate or photoshop)
DIYvinci Idea Studio (for color palette inspiration)
Step 1: Choose Your Three Forms
Boho art often features organic and geometric elements. Pick three simple forms such as:
Circles, triangles, and lines (for a modern feel)
Leaves, waves, and dots (for a nature-inspired look)
Arches, sunbursts, and abstract shapes (for a trendy boho aesthetic)
Sketch them lightly on your canvas or workspace, arranging them in a balanced, flowing composition.
Step 2: Select Your First Color Palette
Using DIYvinci Idea Studio, choose a harmonious three-color palette. Here are some options to try:
Earthy Warmth: Terracotta, mustard yellow, deep brown
Soft Neutrals: Beige, muted pink, soft gray
Cool Serenity: Sage green, dusty blue, warm ivory
Assign each shape a different color and experiment with layering and blending to create depth and interest.
Step 3: Play with Composition & Texture
Overlap shapes to create movement and connection.
Use different brushstrokes or digital textures (dry brush, stippling, or smooth gradients) to enhance contrast.
On the top of shapes draw a natural element like leaf or tree or a flower with black colour.
Add tiny details like dots, dashes, or subtle shading to enrich the design.
Step 4: Repeat with a New Color Palette
Now, switch to a completely different palette and repeat the exercise. Notice how the mood shifts:
A warm palette feels cozy and grounded.
A cool palette gives a calm and airy vibe.
A bold, high-contrast palette feels modern and edgy.
By doing this, you’ll train your eye for color harmony and develop your own boho art style.
This exercise is a great way to build confidence in composition, color choices, and expressive mark-making. Keep exploring different forms and palettes to discover what resonates with your personal aesthetic. Share your creations and inspire others in the DIYvinci Art Community!
