A Mended-Looking Paper Patch

Turn a tear into a visible decorative patch with drawn stitches.

Torn lavender paper is bridged by a teal patch decorated with white stitch marks, beside a glue stick, white pen, and paper scraps on a sunlit table.

Time: 10–20 minutes, plus drying

Use two contrasting scraps and a glue stick or suitable paper glue. Active time excludes drying; no sewing is involved.

What you need

Try this idea

  1. Make a small tear in one scrap, or choose one already torn.
  2. Tear a contrasting patch large enough to overlap the damaged area.
  3. Glue the patch over the tear and draw short stitch-like marks around its edge.
  4. Leave it flat to dry. Notice how the patch has become the part that draws your eye.

A smaller version

Lay a patch over the tear without gluing it.

A good place to stop

One attached patch with a few drawn stitches is enough.

Make it work for you

Use large pieces and widely spaced marks. Have pieces prepared if tearing is uncomfortable.

Another way in

Use two overlapping patches instead of one.
