A Pattern from One Repeated Mark

Create a rhythm by changing the space between identical marks.

Repeated teal curved marks form flowing rows with varied spacing on cream paper, beside a teal pen and lavender notebook on a sunlit wooden table.

Time: 5–15 minutes

Pick an easy mark you can repeat without precision. A dash or little curve is enough.

What you need

Try this idea

  1. Choose one simple mark and make a short row with roomy gaps.
  2. Make another row with the same mark but closer gaps.
  3. Continue for a small patch, alternating close and roomy spacing. Stop while it still feels comfortable.

A smaller version

Make three widely spaced marks and three close ones.

A good place to stop

Two rows with different spacing complete the pattern.

Make it work for you

Use large marks and light pressure. Short rows reduce repeated hand work.

Another way in

Change only the direction of the marks instead of their spacing.
