Dance Directions for an Invisible Creature

Invent a small movement sequence for a creature made of something unexpected.

A sketchbook shows a wispy teal and lavender creature in three movements labeled “Sway,” “Turn,” and “Pause,” with the note “A dance for a little breeze.” Colored pencils rest beside it on a sunlit table.

Time: 15–20 minutes

Choose only movements that feel comfortable today. The whole dance can happen seated, and pauses belong in the sequence.

Try this idea

  1. Choose what your creature is made of: fog, jelly, folded paper, or something else.
  2. Invent four small comfortable movements for it. A tiny shoulder shift, head turn, or slow arm float can be enough.
  3. Try the movements in an order you like, leaving a pause between each.
  4. Give the sequence a title and repeat only the part you enjoyed.

A smaller version

Imagine a single movement without doing it.

A good place to stop

One movement and a title count as a finished creature dance.

Make it work for you

Keep your hands relaxed and make movements smaller, or direct an imaginary dancer entirely in your head. Stop any movement that feels uncomfortable.

Another way in

Describe the movements as a poem or draw four simple marks.
