The Same Object, Different Light

Compare what light changes while your subject stays still.

Side-by-side views of a teal ceramic mug in soft daylight and warm sunlight with a long shadow.

Time: 15–30 active minutes; daylight waiting time varies

Choose a nearby stationary object and two lighting conditions already available, such as a room light on and off. You can also wait for daylight to change; waiting time is extra.

What you need

Try this idea

  1. Place your device comfortably and take a photo of the object in the current light.
  2. Keep the object still. Change an existing room light if easily accessible, or return when the daylight changes.
  3. Take a second photo from approximately the same position.
  4. Compare one shadow, one edge, and one color. Keep the pair as a light study.

A smaller version

Compare the object by eye in two lighting conditions.

A good place to stop

Two photos and one noticed difference complete the study.

Make it work for you

Ask someone to operate an out-of-reach light, or wait for daylight instead. Keep device handling brief.

Another way in

Photograph the same object on a bright day and a cloudy day.
