The Loomis method is used for drawing a proportionate face. It provides a structured approach to drawing the human head and face with correct proportions and anatomical accuracy. This technique was developed by Andrew Loomis, a renowned American illustrator. Start with simple sketches and gradually add details. Follow the step-by-step demonstration given here.

Like any drawing technique, the Loomis method requires practice to master. While the Loomis method provides a general guideline for proportions, individual features can vary widely. Adjust the basic shapes and proportions to match the specific characteristics of the person you are drawing.

Welcome back to another tutorial !!!  By following these step-by-step instructions, you will learn how to add depth, dimension, and realism to your nose drawings. So, let’s dive in and have some fun! ( Scroll all the way down for the digitally version but Traditional version could also be helpful )

Materials Needed For Traditional Art :
1. Drawing paper or sketchbook
2. Pencil (preferably HB or 2B)
3. Eraser
4. Set of colored pencils or markers (preferably a range of skin tones)
5. Blending tool (optional, such as a blending stump or cotton swab)
6. Reference image of a nose (you can find one online or use a photograph)

Step 1: Sketch the Nose Outline
– Start by lightly sketching the basic shape of the nose using your pencil. Observe the reference image and pay attention to the proportions and angles.
– Begin with a simple triangle shape for the bridge of the nose and add curves for the nostrils.
– Remember to keep the lines light and easily erasable.

Step 2: Add Shading to Create Depth
– Start shading the areas of the nose that are in shadow using your pencil. Refer to the reference image to identify these areas.
– Use light, circular motions to gradually build up the shading. Begin with a light touch and gradually increase the pressure as needed.
– Pay attention to the contours of the nose, such as the bridge, sides, and tip, and shade accordingly to create a three-dimensional effect.

Step 3: Layering Colors for Realism
– Select a light skin tone colored pencil or marker and gently layer it over the shaded areas of the nose. Use light pressure and build up the color gradually.
– To create a more realistic look, choose a slightly darker skin tone and layer it over the areas that require more depth, such as the shadows and creases.
– Use a light touch and blend the colors smoothly. If desired, you can use a blending tool to further soften and blend the colors.

Step 4: Highlighting and Adding Details
– Use an eraser to gently lift off some of the colored pencil or marker in areas where light hits the nose, such as the bridge and tip. This will create highlights and add dimension.
– Add subtle details such as small lines for wrinkles, pores, or freckles, using a fine-tipped colored pencil or marker. Be careful not to overdo it; less is often more when it comes to details.

Step 5: Refine and Evaluate
– Step back and evaluate your work. Compare it to the reference image and make any necessary adjustments.
– Use your pencil to refine the shading, add more depth, or make any necessary corrections.
– Take your time during this step, as it is crucial for achieving a realistic and polished result.

Step 6: Final Touches and Finishing
– Once you are satisfied with your colored nose, carefully erase any remaining pencil lines and smudges.
– Sign your artwork and consider adding a background or additional elements to complete the composition.
– Congratulations! You have successfully colored a nose!

How To Color A Nose Digitally :

Step 1 : Draw out a basic sketch of a nose then establish the nose shape and a clean outline.

Step 2 : Lay down basic skin colors and highlights on a new layer from the sketch layer. ( Note you can use the basic colors to refine shadows and shapes. Most highlights on the nose involve the tip and the bridge depending on where the light is coming from) ( Darker skin tones of the nose can be found on the side of the bridge and the bottom of the nose where the nostrils are)

Blending tip !!!!

Don’t try to blend, just by color picking. For example in makeup there’s always a transition of color when blending  eye shadow, it’s like a in between mixture of color.

Step 3 : Using a soft blend brush, blend the shadows ( Note the bottom gets stronger shadowing) After blending you can go back in and refine the highlights with delicate light on the tip and the area where the forehead starts. Sharp light behind the wings of the nostrils will help distinct it better from the face and also refining the tip and bridge a bit too.

Step 4 : Believe it or not nose’s can have expression’s or emotion to them ! Many noses can have a hint of a reddish tone when someone is sick, exposed to cold or just blushing.  Blood veins in the nose and cheeks passes through that area so it brings off a reddish or pinkish color. The groove of the nostril is redder because the skin is thinner. Oil usually collects where the tip, edge of the nostril groove, and bridge of the nose is so the highlights appear more there, giving a shiny bright look. The tip of the nose begins from dark to light and the center is where there is light.

Tips:
1. Practice shading techniques on a separate sheet of paper before starting the project.
2. Use light pressure when sketching and layering colors to avoid damaging the paper.
3. Take breaks and step away from your artwork periodically to maintain a fresh perspective.
4. Experiment with different skin tones and shading techniques to find your preferred style.
5. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; they are an essential part of the learning process.

Remember, the key to mastering any creative project is practice and patience. With each attempt, you will improve your skills and develop your unique artistic style. Enjoy the process and have fun exploring your creativity!

Let’s break down how to draw a nose !

Drawing realistic facial features can be a challenging but in this tutorial, we will focus on each step to draw a nose 😀 .  So, let’s dive in and start creating!

Materials Needed:
1. Drawing paper
2. Pencil (preferably an HB or 2B)
3. Eraser
4. Optional: Reference images of noses for inspiration

For digital you can use your comfortable set of digital pencil’s

Step 1: Understanding the Basic Structure of a Nose
Before we start drawing, it’s essential to grasp the basic structure of a nose. A nose consists of three main parts: the bridge, the nostrils, and the tip. The bridge is the upper part that connects to the forehead, while the nostrils are the openings at the bottom. The tip is the pointed end of the nose.

Step 2: Sketching the Guidelines
Begin by lightly sketching the guidelines for the nose. Draw a vertical line in the center of your paper, representing the nose’s midline. Then, draw a horizontal line intersecting the vertical line, indicating the position and angle of the nose. This guideline will help you maintain symmetry and proportion throughout the drawing.

Step 3: Outlining the Bridge
Starting from the top of the vertical guideline, draw two curved lines that represent the sides of the nose bridge. These lines should follow the shape of the guideline and gradually converge as they approach the tip of the nose. Remember to keep your lines light and loose, as we will refine them later.

Step 4: Shaping the Nostrils
Next, focus on the nostrils. Draw two small, curved lines on each side of the vertical guideline, below the bridge. These lines should be wider at the bottom and taper towards the bridge. The shape of the nostrils can vary, so observe your reference images or experiment with different styles to find what suits your preference.

Step 5: Defining the Tip
Moving towards the tip of the nose, draw a small triangular shape that connects the bridge and the nostrils. This triangle should be narrower at the top and wider at the base. Pay attention to the angle and proportions, as these details greatly influence the overall appearance.

Step 6: Refining the Nose Shape
Now that we have the basic structure in place, it’s time to refine the nose’s shape. Using your initial lines as a guide, darken and smooth out the outline of the bridge, nostrils, and tip. Add subtle curves and contours to make the nose appear more three-dimensional. Remember to keep your strokes light and build up the details gradually.

Step 7: Adding Shadows and Highlights
To create depth and realism, we need to add shading. Observe your reference images or imagine a light source, and determine where the shadows and highlights fall on the nose. Use your pencil to gently shade the areas that are in shadow, such as the sides of the bridge and the underside of the tip. Leave the areas that catch the light, like the bridge’s top and the tip’s upper portion, relatively lighter.

Step 8: Blending and Smoothing
To achieve a more realistic look, blend the shading using a blending stump, cotton swab, or your finger. This will help soften any harsh lines and create a smoother transition between light and shadow. Be gentle while blending to avoid smudging the drawing. This works for digital too 🙂

Step 9: Final Touches and Details
Take a step back and evaluate your drawing. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the nose looks proportional and realistic. Add any additional details, such as subtle lines to indicate skin texture or small highlights to enhance the shine on the tip. Also some noses have freckles and molds. Remember, less is often more when it comes to details, so keep them subtle and refined.

Congratulations! You have successfully learned how to draw a nose from scratch. Remember, practice takes more practice, so continue honing your skills by drawing various noses from different angles and perspectives. As you become more comfortable, experiment with different styles and techniques to add your unique artistic touch. Keep exploring and enjoy the journey of capturing the beauty of facial features in your drawings!

I had an old mirror, so I decided to craft a brand-new frame for it.
It is made our of hardboard of a box. decorative reliefs done with the impasto.
I’m currently in the process of adding more floral design and going to color it.

To embark on this project, you will need some essential materials: a cardboard box, Gesso, Impasto, double-sided tape, a cutter, a pencil, paintbrushes, a spatula, and decorative items like diamonds or other embellishments.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Begin by taking a cardboard box and sketch a design for the hand mirror’s frame.

2. Cut out the design, ensuring that the frame size exceeds the mirror by at least 2 centimeters.

3. Create an identical layout for the back side of the frame.

4. Position the mirror on the backside frame and affix it with double-sided tape, then attach the front side to complete the hand mirror frame. To give extra strength the frame, you can either use white m-seal or insert a wooden stick between the two mirror layers during the initial frame construction.

5. Apply a layer of Gesso to the frame, which will not only strengthen it but also serve as a suitable base for painting.

6. Use the impasto technique with a spatula and paintbrushes to fashion decorative designs such as roses, leaves, and patterns on the frame.

7. Adorn the frame with diamonds and other decorative elements, and then add color to the hand mirror.

Follow these steps, and you’ll soon have a newly revitalized mirror to enjoy.

This is a digital painting. The idol of Lord Ram in the center is surrounded by people in  Warli art style celebrating the Ram mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony . I’ll be providing insights into the fascinating Indian folk art form known as Warli Art. It is a tribal art indigenous to the Maharashtra state in India. Warli Art used to be done as murals outside the walls of houses. Today also Warli art mural outside or inside house wall looks very fascinating. People of all age groups like to do this art form. The simplicity and monochromatic nature of Warli art give it a unique charm.

Key features of Warli art include simple geometric shapes like circles, triangles, and squares to represent human figures, animals, and other elements. The art is characterized by its use of a dark-colored background with white colored lines, or vice versa. One of the most popular themes in Warli art is a spiral chain of humans around one central motif. This is said to represent life’s ‘eternal journey’ that has no beginning and end. Other themes include daily life, rituals, and celebrations.

Here’s a basic guide on how to create Warli art:

Materials needed:
Paper or canvas,
acrylic or poster paints,
brushes, and a pencil,
water, and a palette.

Steps:
1. Prepare the Surface:
Start with a clean, smooth surface. Traditionally, Warli art is done on walls, but you can use paper, canvas, or any other surface of your choice.

2. Create Background:
Choose the background color, either dark or light. Apply one or two coats to get a nice background. Allow it to dry completely.

3. Draw Basic Shapes:
Draw basic shapes with pencil such as circles, triangles, and squares, and lines. It is two-dimensional, so no perspective is needed. Humans are made using a circle for the face and two inverted triangles as a body, with thin lines for hands and legs. To depict a woman, on the circle (face), draw a curved line to depict pony hair or make a little circle for a bun. Remember to keep the lines simple and use dots or other minimal details. You can also add some details such as jewelry, clothing patterns, leaves in the trees using dots and lines. Use a pencil or light-colored chalk to sketch. These will form the foundation of your Warli painting.

4. Paint Figures:
Paint with black or white or whichever colour is in contrast to the background, trace over the sketched shapes to create human figures, animals, trees, and other elements.

5. Let it Dry:
Allow your painting to dry completely before handling or framing.
Remember, while it’s great to draw inspiration from traditional Warli art, you can also add your own creative elements and interpretations to make your artwork unique. Have fun experimenting with different compositions and themes within the stylistic framework of Warli art.

Creating a proportionate human figure involves using basic shapes like lines, circles, and cylinders as a foundation. Make the hands and legs in the form of cylinders. A cube indicating torso and oval for the face. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Begin by sketching a straight vertical centre line.
  2. Divide this line into 8 equal parts to establish the proportions.
  3. The first part is dedicated to the face. Draw a circle in this section and slightly extend it to form an oval shape.
  4. Move to the second part for the neck and shoulders.
  5. Allocate the 3rd and 4th parts for the chest and stomach.
  6. For the legs, use the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th parts. Position the knees in the middle of the 6th and 7th parts.
  7. In the 1st part, divide the circle into four equal parts. Eye lie on the horizontal diameter of the circle’s centre. The nose will extend nearly to the bottom of circle. Draw a triangle whose one end in the centre of two eyes and other two end at the bottom of circle parallel to each other. In this triangle, draw the nose. Lips would in the extended portion.
  8. Hands will extend from shoulders to the bottom of 5th portion. Elbow at the bottom of the 3rd partition

Tip : It’s better to put the pupils close to the center of the face like seen below. It makes the character look innocent and like the character is looking at you 😀

Thanks for drawing with me !

Let’s break down the basics of skin tones 😀 !!!

When laying down skin tones it’s important to remember three words : Base, Highlights and Shadows.

Sometimes it’s easier to start with the dark and work towards the light. Think of a light bulb lighting up a room, one light bulb can light up the whole room, however, there will still be a darker corner of the room further away from the light source. You also have to come closer to a light source in order to see. 🙂

Skin tones have many shades of color in them like red tones, yellow tones, and bluish tones. Red tones are found where there is warmth on the skin such as where the cheeks, eyes, and nose is. Where as Bluish tones or grey tones are in darker areas like chin, neck, and mouth area. Yellow or white brown tones are found on the forehead. These colors are known as Color Zones : Skinned complexion on the face can be divided into three zones. This depends on largely on how much blood, cells, muscles, hair or veins are present on our body. Cool right ? However when doing the skin tone don’t worry much about color zones but it will help you mapping out your skin complexion :).

What really helps me when figuring out which darker tones go where feel your face. You will feel where some areas on your face are deeper than other parts and some are more outward. Take the eye for example, underneath the eye, sides and on the eyelid we have a lot of deeper parts because of the eye socket and on the eyebrow its more outward.

To bring your skin more to life you can add different hues of colors 😀

Check out my artwork I did of Miles Morales below you will notice different colors like blue, purple, orange, pink and yellow while the main skin tone is still visible. These are know as Under Tones. Under Tones can be pretty much any color. You can layer them under or over your base colors when drawing to get more depth and realism. By increasing the saturation at the edge of the light and shadows it brings the skin to life. 😀

Hope these skin tone tips were helpful !!!

P.S feel free to stop by my art shop for some goodies :  Byzahraartz.redbubble.com 😄

There’s two ways i like to draw realistic hair one way is by using brushes i found on this site for procreate https://procreate.brushes.work and another way just using colors  😀 so let’s break it down step by step

Making Realistic Hair Using Procreate Brushes ( See 1st ArtWork Of Zendaya For This Step by Step)

Step 1 : First Outline where i want the hair to go and which style you want it in.

Step 2 : Next lay down basic colors of the hair. For example of Zendaya’s hair in the first photo I used basic colors of burnt brown, light brown and dark brown.

Step 3 : After laying down all the basic colors, I blend the colors together lightly (not too much so i can still see some basic colors here and there).

Step 4 : Using hair brushes from https://procreate.brushes.work (p.s you can choice whatever hair brushes you like 😀 )( I mostly use Hyde’s Hair Set) I lay down the hair then lower the opacity to 40 or 50% determining on how it looks. You can see in the example artwork I did Zendaya’s hair strains can still be seen with light and dark strains. I also blend some strains to make it look natural. I usually put the highlights down where ever the light is coming from.

Thats how to make hair strains realistically using procreate brushes 🙂

Making Realistic Hair Without Procreate Brush ( See 2nd Artwork of Sylvie for this step by step)

Step 1 : First outline where you want the hair to go and which style you want then lay down basic hair colors. For Sylvie’s hair in the second artwork I used a light brown, light yellow, and rusty brown.

Step 2 : Next blend the basic hair colors. Once you blended the colors take a darker color of the hair and create strokes do this with the lighter color too. I personally like use a pencil brush from the free Diyvinci.com set to create my strokes along with a smaller soft brush or just with any brush for your own comfort too will work.

Step 3 : Gently blend the strokes to where it’s still visible but nicely blended.

Tip : Make sure your strokes are going in the direction of the hair. For example, if your character has curly hair the strokes are more of a swirl or if they have straight hair the strokes may have a slight curve in them to give it a flowy look.

Step 4 : Start a new layer Adding more strokes and lower the opacity on those strokes. This adds more volume to the hair and making it look fuller. Determining wear the light is on side of the hair may have more darker strokes than the other side. With my character i added bright green strokes to outline the hair for a cool effect 😆.

That’s how you make realistic hair strains 😀
