A Photograph of Almost Nothing
Use empty space to give one small detail room to stand out.

Time: 5–10 minutes
Choose a view within comfortable reach. The empty space is the main part of this composition.
What you need
- phone or camera
Try this idea
- Find one small detail against a mostly plain background, such as a seam, leaf, or patch of light.
- Frame it near one edge so most of the picture stays quiet and uncluttered.
- Take a photograph and compare it with a tighter crop on screen. Choose the amount of space you prefer.
A smaller version
Compose the picture on screen without taking it.
A good place to stop
One frame with deliberate empty space is complete.
Make it work for you
Support your device on a stable surface. Use an existing photo and crop it if holding a camera is tiring.
Another way in
Try placing the detail at the opposite edge of the frame.
