Make it

Choose a view within comfortable reach. The empty space is the main part of this composition.

  1. 1

Find one small detail against a mostly plain background, such as a seam, leaf, or patch of light.

  2. 2

Frame it near one edge so most of the picture stays quiet and uncluttered.

  3. 3

Take a photograph and compare it with a tighter crop on screen. Choose the amount of space you prefer.

Short on energy? Compose the picture on screen without taking it.

A good place to stop: One frame with deliberate empty space is complete.

Make it work for you: Support your device on a stable surface. Use an existing photo and crop it if holding a camera is tiring.

Another route: Try placing the detail at the opposite edge of the frame.
