a playful forced-perspective photograph

A Giant Made by Camera Distance

Make a small object look enormous by changing its distance from the camera.

  • 10–20 minutes
  • Little setup
  • Easy to pause
  • Seated friendly
  • Little cleanup
  • Low effort

What you need

Choose two small, lightweight objects and a clear tabletop. You can do the whole experiment seated.

  • phone or camera
  • found objects

Make it

Choose two small, lightweight objects and a clear tabletop. You can do the whole experiment seated.

  1. 1

Place one object near the camera and the second farther back.

  2. 2

Frame them so the nearer object seems unexpectedly large beside the distant one.

  3. 3

Move the camera slightly until the edges form a convincing relationship, then take a photo.

  4. 4

Compare the photo with the real arrangement and put the objects away.

Short on energy? Frame the illusion without taking a photo.

A good place to stop: One playful size illusion completes the photograph.

Make it work for you: Support the camera on a stable surface and slide objects within easy reach. Ask for help positioning them if needed.

Another route: Make the near object appear to balance on the distant one without actually stacking them.
