Colored-pencil drawing of a teal dragon in a lavender apron, accidentally breathing fire onto a tray of cookies. The sketchbook rests on a sunlit wooden table beside colored pencils.

An Extremely Unqualified Dragon

Invent a dragon with an everyday job and a wonderfully inconvenient talent.

  • 5–15 minutes
  • No setup
  • Easy to pause
  • Seated friendly
  • No cleanup
  • Low effort

What you need

A bean-shaped body is all the drawing skill this dragon needs. Use materials you already own.

  • paper
  • pen

If you have them: colored pencils.

Make it

  1. 1

Draw a bean for a body and add eyes, a tail, and any number of legs.

  2. 2

Give the dragon a job it is hilariously bad at, such as ironing shirts with fiery sneezes.

  3. 3

Draw one accessory that helps it try: enormous mittens, a tiny watering can, or a clipboard.

  4. 4

Add a reassuring motto, such as Still Learning, Still a Dragon.

Short on energy? Draw a bean with eyes and name its job.

A good place to stop: Your dragon has a job and one helpful accessory.

Make it work for you: Draw large and skip small details. Dictate the character description if drawing is tiring.

Another route: Give your dragon a job it unexpectedly does very well.
