What you need

Stay wherever you are comfortable. You are listening to what is already there, without recording or making new sounds.

Nothing at all.

Make it

Stay wherever you are comfortable. You are listening to what is already there, without recording or making new sounds.

  1. 1

Notice one nearby sound, such as clothing moving or a fan. Think of it as the foreground.

  2. 2

Notice a farther-away sound if there is one. Think of it as the background; quiet can fill this role too.

  3. 3

Notice something intermittent, or the gaps between sounds. Imagine these as small accents in the composition.

Short on energy? Notice a single sound for a few moments.

A good place to stop: One foreground sound and one quiet gap are enough.

Make it work for you: Keep your eyes open and stop if listening feels overwhelming. As a visual alternative, notice a nearby shape, a distant shape, and the space between them.

Another route: Return to the same spot at a different time and compare its layers.
