What you need

Make it
Use an ordinary pen and paper. This is a mark-making experiment, with no need to change or slow your breathing.
- 1
Rest your paper and forearm comfortably, then place the pen anywhere on the page.
- 2
During one ordinary exhale, move the pen gently in any direction. Lift it when you naturally finish breathing out.
- 3
Leave the line unchanged. Stop there or make up to two more lines, allowing normal breaths between them.
Short on energy? Make one short line at any pace, without coordinating it with breathing.
A good place to stop: One untouched line is the finished work.
Make it work for you: Skip the breathing cue if it is uncomfortable; move the pen for a moment and stop. Use a broad, loose movement rather than tiny marks.
Another route: Repeat on another day and notice how the lines differ.
